Geek Speak #6 - Silicon going the way of the Dodo?

Researchers from Hewlett Packard has recently come out with devices called crossbar latches that can be used to perform calculations in microprocessors. They consist of a grid of microscopic wires linked by molecules at their intersections. This is something that will potentially delay Moore's Law from it's imminent death by a few decades and provide new opportunites for further miniaturisation of circuits. Imagine, circuit junctions between the wires of as small as 2 nanometers. Current silicon transistors can only get down to around 15 nanometers before they stop working. This probably means that there will be more mini gadgets that will become more and more powerful. Great news for geeks like me!
